Syed Abdul Latif Kazmi, often referred to as Barī Imām or Barī Sarkār 1617 - 1705, was a 17th-century Sufi from the Punjab who was one of the leading Sufis in the Shia order.
He is revered as a patron saint of Islamabad, Pakistan. He was born in Karnal, in the Chakwal region of the Tid family. He is revered by all those Shia Muslims, especially in the Indian Subcontinent, who are deeply rooted in Sufi culture.
The life of Bari Imam is known "primarily through oral tradition and hagiographical pamphlets and is celebrated with Qawali songs of Indian and Pakistani Sufism.
On this day, Bari Imam is one of the most famous and revered Punjab saints.
Bari Imam was eight years old when his family moved from Karsal in the Chakwal region to a place now called Aabpara, Islamabad in Pakistan.
His father, Syed Mehmood Shah, was a farmer. So he helped his father with farming and herds of animals until he was 12 years old. Bari Imam was then sent to Ghorghushti in Campbellpur now known as Attock, Punjab, Pakistan.
Where he remained for two years to study fiqh, hadith, logic and other Islamic teachings because at that time Ghorghushti was the main chair of Islamic Studies.
According to some sources, he later married and had one daughter, although both his wife and daughter are said to have died prematurely.
After their deaths, the Bari Imam began wandering in the forests of the Hazara region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where he spent twenty-four years as a man of self-control.
Shah Abdul Latif also traveled to the then Central Asian provinces and to the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Madinah to learn about Islam and perform the hajj.
Chorepur becomes 'Noorpur Shahan'
Because of its name full of criminals and assassins who often attacked and robbed caravans who traded passing through the area toward Central Asian provinces.
In time, she was able to teach these people love, peace, and harmony. Shah Abdul Latif later became known as the "Bari Imam".
For Bari Imam Sarkar did not convey any of his teachings in writing; thus, it would be reasonable to conclude that he abandoned all his teachings orally.
Bari Imam was known throughout his life for being a very humble man who was very humble in society, “living among the believers and openly expressing contempt for the people.
The famous miracle worker, Bari Imam is also described in the history of the region as the one through whom God performed many miracles to convince the local people of the truth of Islam; therefore, some of the most famous miracles of his so-called making of water flow out of rocks and bringing back to life the dead water buffaloes of a farmer.
Who once gave a saint milk to a saint during a decade of spiritual separation.
The Silver-mirrored site of the Bari Imam is located in Noorpur Shahan, Islamabad. It was first built by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, who honored Bari Sarkar, in the 17th century.
It has been rehabilitated several times, and is now being maintained by the Government of Pakistan. Until the 1960's, this shrine was famous for its observance, commemorating the death of the saint and which was attended by hundreds of thousands of people each year in one year with a large population, the attendance was estimated at 1.2 million people.
It was in the 17th century about 300 years ago, when Hazrat Bari Imam lived in modern-day Islamabad. He had reportedly predicted at that time about the capital of the Islamic republic in the area in the near future.
