Hazrat Abbas ibn Ali

Abbas was born in the month of Sha'ban in the year 26 AH about May 647 CE in the Medo-Persian city of Ali and Umm al-Banin. Abbas had three full brothers, Abdullah, Ja'far, and Uthman. Abbas married a distant cousin named Lubaba bint Ubaydillah.

They had three sons named Fadl ibn Abbas, Muhammad ibn Abbas, and Ubaydullah ibn Abbas. His mother recited famous poetic lines in supplication to ward off the evils of those who were jealous.

Abbas served as a soldier in the Battle of Siffin, one of the major conflicts of the Abbasids' father, Ali, and Mu'awiya in 657. Dressed in the clothes of his father, known as the great hero, Abbas was killed. many enemy soldiers.

Muawiya's forces actually took him as Ali. Therefore, when Ali appeared on the battlefield, Muawiya's soldiers were surprised to see him and were confused about who the other soldier was.

He is Abbas, the month of Hashim. Abbas was trained by his father and older brother Hasan ibn Ali in martial arts, which may have been one reason why he resembled his father on the battlefield.

Describing his battle on the battlefield, many historians refer to him as a fierce lion because of his bravery, fearlessness, and strength.

Abbas then became the coach of many of his older brothers' sons in martial arts. An example of this is the courage of Ali al-Akbar, son of Husayn ibn Ali.He also taught Qasim ibn Hasan, Awn ibn Abdullah ibn Ja'far and Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Ja'far.

Entry of Abbas shrine in Karbala, Iraq Abbas showed his loyalty to Husayn in the Battle of Karbala. After succeeding his father Mu'awiya I as Caliph, Yazid demanded that Husayn take the oath of allegiance to him, but Husayn refused, saying,

Yazid is a murderer for no reason, and a person like me does not swear allegiance to a person like him...

Since Yazid's conduct was and still is forbidden in Islam, if Husayn had promised allegiance to Yazid, his action would have undermined the foundations of Islam.

Husayn's older brother Hasan ibn Ali had made an agreement that Ahl al-Bayt would face religious decisions and would not interfere in other matters. Husayn wanted to do what was agreed, but Yazid I wanted complete control.

With the help of Ubayd Allah, Yazid invited him to come to Death and guide them to the right path, an invitation accepted by Husayn.

However, it is alleged that the letters were actually sent by the people of Kufa who later betrayed him when the body of Muslim ibn Aqil Husayn's envoy to Death was thrown into a building in the middle of Death by Yazid's army while he was executing Death.

In 60 AH 680, Husayn left Medina for Mecca with a small group of friends and family members to go to Death.

He sent his cousin, Muslim ibn Aqil, to go ahead and see how he would be received and then decide to enter Death based on the advice of his cousin. However, by the time Husayn arrived near Death, his cousin had been killed.

On the way to Death, Husayn and his group were stopped.  They were forced to deviate and arrived in Karbala on 2 Muharram, 61 AH. Husayn's camp was surrounded and cut off from the Euphrates River. The camp ran out of water on 7 Muharram.

The Euphrates River

In addition to being the "general commander" of Husayn ibn Ali's army, Abbas was asked by Husayn to give water to the thirsty children.

The Euphrates River overflowed its banks with Yazid I's army blocking Husayn's camp from getting water. Abbas was only allowed to take a defensive role because his brother Husayn did not want him to fight

. He was only allowed to get water although there is an account that says he also participated in the war.

Finally, Abbas went to the river to fetch water for the children in Husayn's camp.  However, he was shot back and died on Friday, 10 Muharram, 61 AH, near the Euphrates.

Therefore, he is called the "Warrior of the Euphrates" Arabic: بطل العلقمي. Shia Muslims mourn the deaths of all those who fell in the Battle of Karbala and Husayn during the Islamic month of Muharram, especially during the first ten days of the month.

Abbas' death is often commemorated on the eighth night of Muharram. Fadl ibn Abbas and Qasim ibn Abbas also laid down their lives in Karbala. Abdullah ibn Abbas lived to continue the lineage of Abbas and his five sons.

Abbas is buried in the ground where he fell on his horse in Karbala, Iraq. The Al-Abbas Shrine is located near his tomb, where millions of pilgrims worship each year.
